Butterfly Flower
The Butterfly Flower, 'Aschepias tuberosa L. ', is a must for the butterfly garden. Butterflies will seek out your garden when you have this vigorous perennial shrub-like plant. The vivid red-orange flowers attract the Monarch butterfly. The individual flowers are 1/2 inch long, borne in brilliant red clusters and bloom in the summer. The flowers are followed by decorative green seed pods. The Butterfly Flower prefers full sun but will tolerate light shade. Plant them in rich, well drained soil. They are quite drought tolerant, so do not over water. Deadhead the spent flowers to prolong the flowering period. Vinca - Little Pinkie Little Pinkie Vincas are especially useful for the southern or desert climates or hard to maintain hot spots near a concrete or reflecting wall. It blooms best when other plants are hurting from the heat. Little Pinkies can be grown as a perennial in frost free winter areas. It readily reseeds itself and is very drought tolerant. The flowers are 1 to 1/2 inch phlox- like pink blooms with a dark center. Little Pinkie Vinca should be planted in well drained soils and in full sun or very light shade. Plant this Vinca in the spring after the last average frost date. The Vinca Little Pinkie is used in containers, ground cover, and borders. This plant is also known as devil's eye or sorcerer's violet. |
