The Muskmelon Hale's Best Jumbo, 'Cucumis melo-Reticulatus Group', is an old time favorite with a fabulous flavor. Hale's Best has very thick, sweet salmon-pink flesh with a small seed cavity. Talk to old timers and they still swear by Hale's Best. Hale's Best grow and stays sweet in a wide variety of conditions, particularly drought. The muskmelon is about 6 inches in diameter and weighs about 3. 5 pounds each. The Hale's Best Muskmelon is an annual and is very sensitive to frost. The vines spread to about 10 feet in diameter, about the same as most muskmelons. Plant in the spring, 1 to 2 weeks after the last frost when soil temperatures are warm.
