Sweet Pea - Melody
The Sweet Pea Melody Blend, 'Lathyrus odoratus', is a symphony of colors. The 1 to 2 inch flowers appear in six bicolors: deep red/scarlet, deep lavender/light lavender, soft lavender/white, claret/violet blue and soft pink/blush. The flowers are lightly fragrant. The sweet peas bloom in the spring and the duration of blooming depends on the weather. The plants stop blooming once the weather warms up. They will generally bloom 3 to 5 weeks. A key element in successful growing of the Sweet Pea Melody Blend is very early planting. The sweet pea prefers deep, rich, fertile soil. Use lots of peat or compost for early spring planting. Plant this Sweet Pea in full sun, but in a cool a spot as possible. Position them away from winds and rotate locations from year to year to prevent sweet pea pests. Bean Pole - Runner - Scarlet Emperor The Bean Pole Runner Scarlet Emperpr, 'Phaseolus coccineus', has large sprays of brilliant rich, red flowers that contrast against deep green foliage. The Scarlet Emperor is grown for the flowers and the sweet pods. With such magnificent slender clusters of rich red flowers, the Scarlet Emperor is predominantly used as a flowering screen, vine, or fence cover. A little known fact is that this runner bean has an extremely rich beany sweet flavor when picked young. The pods may also be shelled for green or dried beans when pods mature. The Scarlet Emperor is an annual and is very frost sensitive. Pole types have 3 to 7 foot long vines. They have up to 12 inch long pods at maturity. Plant after the last average frost date. Scarlet Emperor beans prefer rich, organic, well drained, warm soils. |
