Tomato - Rutgers Select
The Tomato Rutgers Select, 'Lycopersicon lycopersicum', is an all-purpose variety that is ideal for canning. The Rutgers Select variety ripens evenly from inside out. Rutgers Select produces medium round globe fruits with smooth firm flesh that is ideal for canning and slicing. The bright red fruits have a full-bodied flavor in an attractive old-time favorite. As with all tomato plants staking won't hurt but isn't manditory. This is a great canner and makes a great BLT too. This is one of the best all purpose tomatoes grown. Tomatoes should be planted outside after the last average frost date. In warm winter/hot summer areas, tomatoes can be planted in early fall for winter harvest. Tomatoes prefer well drained soil that is high in organic matter. Tomatoes need at least 1 inch of water a week. Soak to depth of 6 to 10 inches when watering.
