Zinnia - White Star
The Zinnia White Star, 'Zinnia angustifolia', is unlike the Zinnia elegans. White Star Zinnias is a wonderful hanging basket flower. This is an exciting and unusual Zinnia and it is easy to grow. The Zinnia White Star is heat and drought tolerant. Along with its use in hanging baskets, it can be grown as an annual groundcover or used as a perennial in mild climates. The flowers are 1 inch wide pure white daisy-like blooms with yellow centers. The White star Zinnia will begin to bloom 6 weeks after planting and continue blooming into fall. Plant this Zinnia in full sun. It prefers rich, deep, well drained soils. Mix a high phosphorous, low nitrogen fertilizer into the soil. The Zinnia White Star is a low maintenance plant that should be deadheaded regularly. Plant in the spring after the last average frost date. Pansy - Antique Shades The Pansy Antique Shades, 'Viola wittrockiania', is a very beautiful pansy mix. The soft lovely colors make this pansy an easy choice for pansy lovers. Technically a perennial, grown as an annual, pansies will overwinter in climates as cold as zone 4. Antique Shades is an Early Giant type and has 3 inch flowers of mixed colors including baby yellow, peach, burgundy, rust, and cream. Antique Shades prefers full sun but they tolerate some light shade. Plant them in normal garden soils and fertilize lightly. Plant in early spring, 2 to 4 weeks before last frost or in mid summer for fall bloom. In warm climates plant in late summer or early fall. The Pansy works well in locations where late fall and early spring color would be appropiate. |
